2027 State Budget: Legislators Set To Examine Broad Outlines

House Speaker while chairing the opening plenary for the June session of this year’s legislative period called on the lawmakers to ensure they answer fundamental questions in reflections.
“What are the nation’s priorities for the year ahead? What sectors should benefit from special attention? How do we reconcile the needs of Cameroonians with the financial constraints of the State,” are the fundamental questions the House Speaker of the National Assembly, The Right Hnourable Théodore Datouo, told Members of Parliament should be answered during the Budgetary Orientation Debate which is the main objective of this June session. He was speaking during the opening plenary of the second ordinary session for this legislative year that took place on June 9, 2026. According to him, before authorising an expenditure, allocating resources, or setting priorities, the House Speaker said they must first collectively reflect on the direction lawmakers wish to give to public action. “Simply put, it is a matter of discussing the broad outlines of the budget before the figures are even determined. This is a special moment of dialogue between the government and the people’s representatives. It affords Members of Parliament the opportunity to voice the concerns raised by their constituents,” Hon. Théodore Datouo stated. The Speaker further added that the exercise which carries a major advantage encourages anticipation and enhances the quality of public decision-making. Going by him, the Budgetary Orientation Debate strengthens transparency, and above all, enables public policies to better reflect the expectations of the people. Besides the Budgetary Orientation Debate, the House Speaker also raised issues of national interest, which he noted have been rife during public debates.
