Stabilising Crisis Zones : Cameroon Appreciates Commonwealth Support

The official launching ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Day in Cameroon took place at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on February 28, 2022.

The official launching ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Day in Cameroon at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on February 28, 2022 was an occasion to highlight and salute the cooperation between Cameroon and the Commonwealth in working to bring back lasting peace to security crisis-affected Far North, North West and South West Regions.
The Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu who chaired the event on behalf of External Relations Minister, Lejeune Mbella Mbella said that, “Since the creation of a Countering Violent Extremism Unit in the Commonwealth Secretariat and the outbreak of violent extremism activities in the Far North, South West and North West of our country, a comprehensive strategy to address the phenomenon has been underway.” He said the Unit has been building the capacities of stakeholders in Cameroon on the management of violent extremism offenders, incorporating gender and youth approaches and building resilience in affected communities through education. He said, “I will like to underscore and appreciate the invaluable technical assistance from the Commonwealth in support of Cameroon’s determination to employ home-grown options in restoring sustainable peace throughout the national territory. This assistance is yielding commendable results.”
The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day that will be celebrated on Monday, March 14, 2022 is, “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating and Transforming.” Despite the theme, the official launching ceremony of the celebration Minister Felix Mbayu said, is focused among others “on the role of government in managing a whole of society approach to preventing and countering violent extremism.
