2023 AFCON Draw : Tricky Group For Cameroon

Even though many believe it is an easy group for the Indomitable Lions, they will need to work hard to secure a place in Côte d’Ivoire.

Group C against Kenya, Namibia and Burundi in the qualifying tournament of the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. The Indomitable Lions knew of their group after the draw ceremony that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday April 19, 2020. Even though many believe it is an easy group for Cameroon it is a rather tricky one. Football, it is said, is played on the pitch. From all indications the Indomitable Lions are favourites in their group. The five-time African champions will use the qualifying tournament as preparations for the World Cup in Qatar.
Kenya's first hurdle on the road to AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire is the suspension by the World Football governing body, FIFA, following the government’s interference in  football management in the country. Should the suspension be lifted two weeks before the start of the games, Kenya will be hoping to make a return to the AFCON finals after missing out in the delayed 2021 edition held in Cameroon. Kenya has participated at the AFCON six times. The first was in 1972 when Cameroon hosted the competition. After that, they participated in 1988, 1990, 1992, 2000 and 2019. In all their participations, the Harambee Stars have not gone beyond the group stages.
The Brave Warriors of Namibia have been at the AFCON three times-1998, 2008 and 2019 in Egypt. Namibia have not gone past the group stages of the competition. They will have to dig deep in group C to secure a spot for the AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. The Swallows of Burundi have been to the final phase of the AFCON only once in 2019 in Egypt. They were in group B where they lost all their matches and left the 2019 tournament without scoring a single goal. They will have to go the extra mile to make a second appearance in the continental event.
The top two teams in the group will join the rest from 11 other pools at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire that will take place from June 23 to July 23, 2023.
