Central Africa : Peace, Security Measures Adopted in Yaounde

The 53rd Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security in Central Africa took place at the Yaounde Conference Centre on June 4, 2022.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 11 countries that make up the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee in Central Africa (UNSAC) during the 53rd Ministerial meeting at the Yaounde Conference Centre on June 4, 2022 examined the peace and security situation in the Central African Sub-region and adopted some pertinent measures. The pertinent decisions are found in the final communique that sanctioned the meeting.
During the meeting,  Gabon represented by the Minister of State for Interior, Lambert Noel Matha handed the presidency of the Bureau of UNSAC to Cameroon.  The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and heads of the different delegations in the presence of some UN officials reviewed the geopolitical context of Central African. They also examined a series of issues that included the promotion of disarmament, fight against violent extremism and terrorism, cross-border transhumance, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, climate security, human rights situation and democracy, condemnation of hate speech and its impact on peace and security. Central Africa as stated by Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella who spoke on behalf of the Head of State, President Paul Biya, is bedevilled by threats and challenges such as terrorism, proliferation of small arms and light weapons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, natural disasters, climate change that have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and Covid-19 pandemic.
On specific cases, the Ministers and officials shared on the prevailing situation in  Chad. In this regard, they adopted the Yaounde declaration to renew their support to the transition process in that country. They also examined the situation in the Central African Republic. At the end they adopted the declaration reaffirming their support to efforts of peace, national reconciliation and reconstruction put in place by the government...
