World Heritage List : Cameroon Seeks Inclusion Of Mandara Mountains

A team of experts are in the country to evaluate the Mandara Mountains cultural landscape.

The government of Cameroon has submitted its file for the inclusion of the Mandara Mountains in the World Heritage List that would ultimately be inscribed in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage sites. Experts to evaluate cultural landscape of the Mandara Mountains in the northern part of Cameroon are in the country for an eight-day mission. The experts led by Professor Ibrahima Thiaw had discussions with Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute on September 12, 2022.

They were accompanied among others by the Minister of Basic Education, Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, who doubles as the Chairperson of the National UNESCO Commission  and the Minister of Arts and Culture, Bidoung Mkpatt. After their discussions, Ibrahima Thiaw told the press that the Prime Minister was very interested and enthusiastic about the project. The current evaluation mission, he said, was just one step in the process  and they are very impatient to see the site. As to the importance of the Mandara Mountains’ inclusion in the World Heritage list, besides other benefits, it will be good for the publicity of the people of Cameroon.
