National Assembly: House Honours Departed SDF Chairman, Legislators

The National Assembly has paid tribute to the late Social Democratic Front (SDF) National Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi and other lawmakers who passed away during the June session of Parliament. The House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril saluted their memory and their contribution to the democratic process in Cameroon as he chaired the closing plenary of the second ordinary session of the 10th legislative period on July 7, 2023. As concerns the SDF Chairman, the House Speaker said he was a key figure of the opposition in Cameroon from the early 1990s who in all honesty was a man of peace. “Even though socio-political unrest and other forms of violence took their toll, the SDF party became, under his stewardship, a responsible opposition party over time. In this way, he helped to give credibility to our country’s democracy and to build trust among Cameroonians. He will also be remembered for his political slogan ‘power to the people.’ In essence, Ni John Fru Ndi had a personal and significant impact on Cameroon’s political scene,” the House Speaker stated to his honour. Regarding departed legislators, he paid tributes to the deceased Secretary of the National Assembly Bureau, Hon. Isabelle Namamourou Silikam who died on June 12, 2023 after serving at the law-making House for 26 uninterrupted years. In line with parliamentary solidarity, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril honoured the memories of Senators Mireille Adare of the East Region and Paulette Bisseck of the South Region who respectively died on June 22 and June 29, 2023.
