79th UN General Assembly : Aspiring President Presents Vision

Philemon Yang, Cameroon and Africa’s candidate for the position outlined his programme of eight thematic areas during an informal interactive dialogue with member States in New York on May 8, 2024.


Prior to the election of the President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly slated for June 6, 2024 in New York, Cameroon and Africa’s candidate, Philemon Yang has presented his vision to the 193 member States of the organisation.  This was during a traditional informal interactive dialogue chaired by the President of the 78th General Assembly, Dennis Francis.
The former Prime Minister, Head of Government of Cameroon, and one time Cameroon’s High Commissioner to Canada rolled out a programme that borders on eight main areas. “My programme and my priorities are focused on those defined by the Member States themselves and which highlight eight main areas for the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development, the promotion of human rights, the effective coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts, the promotion of justice and international law, disarmament and drug control, crime prevention and the fight against international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” Philemon Yang explained at the high-level meeting.     
If elected, the Statesmen notes that he will strive, throughout his tenure, to promote togetherness, unity, solidarity to address global challenges. This explains why the vision statement of the aspiring President is placed under the theme: “unity in diversity, for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity everywhere and for all.” Justifiable enough, the theme of Philemon Yang includes the three pillars of the work of the UN: peace and security, sustainable development, human rights and humanitarian assistance.
Providing additional clarification to member States at the dialogue, the President hopeful added that he will also focus on specific projects, programmes and frameworks for countries in particular situations such as the Least Developed Countries, landlocked developing countries, small island...
