Libya: Haftar’s Forces Control Oil Installations

The forces have seized the fourth oil port, Brega completing taking over vital oil installations.

Libya’s vital oil installations are now under the control of forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar after the forces seized the oil port of Brega. The capture of the oil port on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 was the culmination of an offensive the forces launched on the country’s oil crescent on Sunday, September 11, 2016.

Al Jazeera reported that General Haftar’s forces fought off guards to gain control of the oil terminal at Ras Lanuf, Al-Sidra and Zuwaytania and finally secured Brega unopposed on Tuesday. “We have taken control of the Brega port completely and without any fighting,” Al Jazeera quoted Colonel Muftah al-Muqaried who heads oil guards loyal to Haftar as having said. He added that, “the entire oil crescent region is now under our control.”

The United States of America and European Union countries that support the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital, Tripoli, have condemned the take over  of oil installations. In a joint statement, they said, the UN-backed government is the “sole steward of these resources” and added that, Libya’s oil belongs to the Libyan people”, Al Jazeera quoted. Supporters of the government in the statement further urged, “ We also call on all forces to avoid any action that could damage Libya’s energy infrastructure  or further disrupt its exports” and equally warned against illicit oil exports.
