CAN 2019 : Related Facilities On Good Footing

Efforts are being made by government to ensure that facilities to host the competition are ready before the start of the football tournament.

Following the decision by Confederation of African Football (CAF) to expand the Africa Cup of Nations from 16 to 24 teams and moving the competition to June and July, all eyes have been on Cameroon. The major cause for worry in the minds of many is whether Cameroon will be able to host a bigger AFCON tournament. One of the conditions for hosting the competition is the provision of related infrastructure notably hotels, hospitals, roads, airports etc, which must be operational and meet the terms of reference of CAF.

As far as lodging of the different delegations are concerned, steps have already been taken to ensure lodging facilities of the teams and the delegations. As far as hotels are concerned, the different cities that hosted the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations such as Yaounde, Limbe and Douala already have hotel infrastructure which meet CAF’s standard norms. The hotel infrastructure in these cities can accommodate more teams than in 2016. In the other towns like Garoua and Bafoussam which will host the games, projects are ongoing for the construction of hotels that meet CAF’s standard norms.

Concerning air and road transport, the Yaounde, Douala, Garoua and Bafoussam and most recently Bamenda airports are operational.  The Tiko Airport which was once an international airport will serve a purpose if renovated. Urban roads are being equally being repaired to facilitate movement during the AFCON 2016.
