Day of the African Woman: Actors Discuss Women In Politics

This was during the 12th edition of the Gender Coffee session organised by UN Women.

 

Ahead of the 55th edition of the Day of the African Woman to be celebrated worldwide on July 31, 2017, Government Ministers, United Nations staff, female senators, female parliamentarians, female mayors, female associations and female activists yesterday July 27, 2017 in Yaounde discussed the balance-sheet of women’s political participation in the country. They also identified obstacles to women’s political participation as well as sampled technical opinion on women’s role in political simulations. Discussions took place during the 12th edition of the Gender Coffee session. The 55th edition of the Day of African Woman will be commemorated under the theme: “Female Leadership and Women’s Political participation”. 

Opening talks was the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie-Therese Abena Ondoa nee Obama. She said women in Cameroon are optimistic about their participation in the political spheres in the country because before the 2013 Legislative and Municipal Election, women’s representation at the National Assembly was below 20 per cent, but now it is above 30 per cent. At the Upper House (Senate) female representation is at 21 per cent while the presence of women at the level of Municipal Councils is below 10 per cent. “We are moving slowly but steadily towards a positive end especially with the support of the Head of State who has clearly stated his support for women leadership and true parity between men and women,” the Minister of Women’s Empowerment noted.
