2018 Elections: ELECAM Fine-tunes Voters’ Registration Strategies

Different antennas across the country are working out captivating methods ahead of the operation which opens on January 2, and ends with the convening of the Electoral College.

Various Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) offices nationwide are wrapping up several mechanisms to get more registered voters on the electoral list once it will be re-opened on January 2, 2018. The diverse strategies which range from using classical and social media, partnering with political parties, custodians of tradition and mobilizations in public areas, are aimed at getting as many persons of voting age, especially women get involved in the political life of the nation.

Elecam branch offices on their part are developing proximity communication strategies targeting potential electors in the field. Going by the Centre Regional Delegate of ElECAM, Michèle Mekeme, whose region registered highest number of enlisted voters at the close of the last operation, various strategies have been used to get these persons.

According to her, in order to achieve positive results, registered voters are contacted by phone and urged to retrieve their cards, others work in collaboration with quarter heads to mobilize their subjects, radio announcements are done, officials are placed in strategic roundabouts on regular basis to sensitise and mobilize the population, the maximum use of their online platform to inform citizens amongst other tactics.

As 2017 comes to an end and in view of multiple elections in 2018, Section 50 of the Electoral Code stipulates that the preparation of electoral activities shall include drawing up and revising electoral registers as well as the issuance and distribution of voters’ cards.
