Biya Wins Hayatou Peace Prize

The announcement was made by the executive president of the Issa Hayatou international foundation in a press conference yesterday.

 

 President Paul Biya has won the 2015 edition of the Issa Hayatou Peace Prize. The announcement was made by the executive president of the Issa Hayatou International Foundation, Ivorian born, Anoi Niniba Castro, in a press conference yesterday at the Hilton hotel in Yaounde. According to the executive president who was flanked by the officer in charge of organization, Charles Titigoeti from Benin and Joel Kodzo Astsuglegledzi from Togo, president Biya was chosen from a shortlist of three nominees.

He said the prize which is awarded to any African who works for peace in his community, country or the continent, was awarded to President Paul Biya because of his effort at maintaining peace and stability not only in Cameroon but also in the central African sub region; he cited for praise President Biya’s peaceful resolution of the Bakassi boarder crisis with Nigeria, the fight against the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, hospitality to refugees, promotion of the free movement of people and their property and most of all for winning the bid to host the 2016 and 2019 AFCONs.

The prize had been won in the past by the president of Togo, Faure Gnasingbe as well as the president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbassogo. Anoi Niniba disclosed that the jury for the selection of the laureate for the award comprises media professionals, football actors as well as official of nongovernmental organisations. He disclosed that the Issa Hayatou International Foundation is an NGO which was created in 2009 with the intention to promote football at the grassroots as well as promote peace through football.

He said several countries have benefited from the assistance of the organisation in the past namely, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon where they offered sports equipment to the Galactique Football Association in Douala in June 2016.
