The Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries made the declaration in Yaounde January 19.

The Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taiga has declared 2018, the Year of health protection of small ruminants. He made the declaration in a New Year wishes ceremony in Yaounde January 19.

The Minister said the decision is intended to intensify the fight against viral infections in sheep and goats especially the peste des petits ruminants (PPR) which he said kills 90 per cent of infected goats and sheep.
He said he had instructed his collaborators especially those of decentralized services to get actively involved in the fight against Small Ruminants Disease.

He also urged all sheep and goat breeders to vaccinate their livestock accordingly. Note that the fight against this disease falls within programme 407 of the Ministry which focuses on improvement of health coverage for livestock and the fight against zoonoses (infectious diseases in animals).

Under the programme, new vet laboratories will be opened in the cities of Bafoussam, Douala and Ngaoundere this year.
Small ruminants are valued in Cameroon for their meat, milk and skin.
