Food Security: Int’l Research Project Kicks Off In Buea

French Ambassador, Gilles Thibault, joined the South West Governor to bless the take-off of the scheme that involves five African countries.

The French Ambassador to Cameroon, Gilles Thibault, has highlighted the challenges of food and nutrition in Cameroon as being at the crossroads of agricultural practices, investments, policies, climate change, market conditions and the fast socio-economic changes. 

The French Diplomat was speaking in Buea, January 23, 2018, as they launched a five-year project to intensify research for breeding roots-tubers-bananas for end-user preferences (RTBfoods). The project officially started in November 2017.

It has as objective to improve food security by increasing yields and the stability of performance through resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. African beneficiary and partner countries include Benin, Cameroon, Côte D’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Uganda.

The French contribution to this endeavour would be through the France-based Centre for Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD).
