
In a meeting with the association More Women in Politics, members of the Electoral Board reaffirmed to rigorously consider gender quota in the composition of lists by political parties.
According to the provisions specific to the election of Members of Parliament, every list presented to the elections management body, Elections Cameroon, (ELECAM) by the different political parties for the Senatorial election billed for March 25, 2018 must be gender-sensitive.
Section 151(3) of the Electoral Code clearly states, “Each list shall take into consideration the various sociological components of the constituency concerned. It shall also take into consideration gender aspects.” By that, ELECAM has the legal authority to reject any list which does not have both male and female candidates.
It is therefore against this backdrop that the National Coordinator of the network More Women in Politics, Prof. Justine Diffo, together with civil society activists, youths and traditional authorities on February 21, 2018 had a working session with some members of the Electoral Board on the meticulous respect of the law during the scrutiny of lists tabled for the senatorial election.
