Gender Equality, Women Empowerment : UN System Largely Concerned

A panel discussion for the International Women’s Day took place yesterday at the UN Information Centre in Yaounde on the theme of this year’s celebration.

In line with activities to mark the 2018 International Women’s Day in the country, the United Nations System in Cameroon yesterday March 6, 2018 schooled a group of Peace and Development students from the Protestant University of Central Africa on concrete actions carried out by the UN System in Cameroon towards empowering women and young girls and how to engage them in the campaign for gender equality.

The Resident Representative of UN Women in Cameroon, Adama Moussa said their real mandate in the country and elsewhere is to ensure women empowerment and gender equality. As such, they work with the government to ensure that laws on women are in line with international conventions.

UN Women also coordinates not only the activities of other UN System agencies but also provide support to other organs in the country involved in issues affecting women.

Adama Moussa said they are out to ensure that women participate in leadership and decision processes at the national and community levels. Ending violence on women and girls is another interest zone for UN Women.
