Urban Development: Constructive Efforts For Decent Housing

Minister Jean Claude Mbwentchou presented the plan in a Question and Answer session with Members of Parliament at the National Assembly last Friday.

Poor drainage systems in cities, bars and grinding mills located in residential areas, constant traffic in major roundabouts and highways being overtaken by petit traders are some of the worries which Parliamentarians questioned the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Jean Claude Mbwentchou with respect to government’s measures to address the situation.

Giving clarifications to members of the Legislative arm of government, the Minister said several government policies geared at improving housing and town planning are being gradually implemented. He said his ministry accompanies and gives technical support to Government Delegates and Mayors who are directly involved in the supervision of housing construction in their various localities.

Minister Jean Claude Mbwentchou cited the 2014 sensitisation campaigns in the towns of Yaounde, Douala and Bafoussam amongst others on the stakes and challenges of urbanisation, highlighting how citizens can individually contribute to the implementation of a harmonised urbanisation policy.

Within the framework of providing decent accommodation at affordable costs, the Minister stated that the Cameroon Real Estate Corporation (Société Immobilière du Cameroun, or SIC), is still implementing the housing policy defined by the Government.
