The Mighty Warriors are still to start preparations, while waiting to receive financial assistance to improve their participation at the tournament.
Three hundred thousand Zimbabwe dollars about 17,700,000 FCFA will be set aside to ease the participation of Zimbabwe female national team. The announcement was made by the Zimbabwe government on the celebrations of the International Day of the Girl Child to promote female football in the country Government in partnership with other actors of the private sector have set up a steering committee, made up of 10 members, that will be in charge of raising funds to help the players embark in a final intensive training programme.
The Sport and Recreation Minister, Makhosini Hlongwane, told guests at the meeting that the Mighty Warriors need the money to cover all expenses from camping, preparations, flight tickets as well as allowances. "With resources available, the team is supposed to be in camp and playing some friendly matches. We wanted a scenario where they go and camp in Ghana a week before the tournament begins, but all that can only happen when there is enough money” the Minister is quoted to have told the press.
Coach Shadreck Mlauzi believes that his team would have done better had it been they were given adequate preparations for the Rio Games, which included international friendly matches against some of the best teams in the world. Unfortunately, this was not taken into consideration and the team performed poorly at the competition. After their AFCON qualifier, the team has not had any sparring-partners and their last friendly match was last month against Egypt, which they won 2-1.
