Mozambique: Ossufo Momade Named Interim RENAMO Chief
Mozambique’s leading opposition party and former rebel movement, RENAMO, now has a new interim leader in the person of Ossufo Momade after veteran chief Afonso Dhlakama died on May 3, 2018 of diabetes at 65 years. Dhlakama, who headed the party for 39 years, died unexpectedly in the bush where he has lived for several years. RENAMO fought a 16-year civil liberation war against the ruling FRELIMO party until 1992. It then emerged as an opposition party, but still retained its armed fighters. Meanwhile, President Filipe Nyusi has urged people to do everything to keep on track the peace process Dhlakama began.
