Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 92, on May 10, 2018, won the bitterly fought general election, beating Najib Razak of the Barisan Nasional, BN coalition that has been in power since independence in 1957. The BBC said the former PM came out of retirement and defected to the opposition Pakatan Harapan - the Alliance of Hope. Pakatan Harapan secured 113 of the 222 seats contested, including some that had always been held by BN. The BN took only 79 seats.
