Mozambique: Former Rebel Leader Given State Burial
Thousands of mourners in the Mozambican port city of Beira, including President Filipe Nyusi, on May 9, 2018 paid final respects to Afonso Dhlakama, the former rebel chief turned opposition leader. Dhlakama died on May 3, 2018 of a suspected heart attack in his hideout in the Gorongosa Mountains. President Nyusi in his eulogy said he was ready to continue peace talks with the next RENAMO leader. Dhlakama led the RENAMO rebel group in the war against the Marxist-inspired FRELIMO government after independence from Portugal in the 1970s.
