SDF: 25 Years Of Varying Fortunes

As  the leading opposition political party in Cameroon, Social Democratic Front (SDF) has contributed much to the country’s political evolution.

Created on May 26, 1990, the Social Democratic Front (SDF) has stood the test of time in shaping the political history of Cameroon. Ever since its creation, the SDF party has been the main opposition political party in Cameroon. It has the second highest number of representatives in the National Assembly, as well as the Senate after the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Twenty eight years down the lane has not been an easy ride as the party has its own ups and downs, but then the SDF has been able to sail through.  According to the party’s National Chairman, ,Ni John Fru Ndi, it has been twenty-eight years of hard work on a not good political terrain. “It has been like pulling my lower lip to cover my face”, he said.

Today the story is different owing to the fact that the National Chairman of the party has decided not to compete as candidate in the upcoming 2018 presidential elections. He made the declaration during the party’s convention that took place in Bamenda,, North West Region from February 22-23, 2018. With this major decision, the party’s hierarchy voted in favour of Hon. Joshua Osih as flagbearer of the party in the elections.

The present situation rocking the two English speaking regions has put the party on its heels as officials claim to have on several occasions written to the government giving proposals on how to seek lasting solutions to grievances. They have equally held several meetings with the population urging them to shun violence and contribute to bringing back normalcy to the concerned regions.

This year, the Social Democratic Front  did not organize any major celebrations to celebrate its 28th anniversary. Party officials say they  are in tears as to what is happening in the North and South West regions and cannot therefore be celebrating while others are seeking refuge in the bushes.

Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi spent the party’s anniversary in Menka- Pinyin in Santa Sub Division where there was reported confrontation between the military and some armed gang. The gang is said to have been terrorizing people within the village through kidnapping and asking for ransomed amongst other atrocities.

Ni John Fru Ndi said he spent the day in Menka to condole with the families that lost their loved onces in the gun battle. He reportedly promised to visit other areas worse affected by the crisis.
