Madagascar: Huge Challenges Await New PM Christian Ntsay

Barely hours after Madagascar’s Prime Minister Olivier Mahafaly Solonandrasana resigned on June 4, 2018 in accordance with a recent Higher Constitutional Court ruling to pave way for the appointment of a consensus PM, President Hery Rajaonarimampianina named Christian Ntsay as his successor. Ntsay, a civil servant, was proposed by the opposition MAPAR party of ex-President Andry Rajoelina. The huge task ahead of the new PM is to form a government of national unity, hold early general polls this year, and win the support of both sides in the political dispute that has lasted over a month in order to bring about understanding amongst the political rivals.
