Madagascar: New PM Consults Opposition

Madagascar’s newly appointed Prime Minister Christian Nstay has begun consulting opposition political parties with a view to ending the political stalemate in the country, Radio France International, RFI, reported on June 6, 2018. The consensus PM’s major task is to form a government of national unity and organise general elections by next September as ordered by a recent ruling of the Higher Constitutional Court. The government and opposition have been at loggerheads since last April after President Hery Rajaonarimampianina introduced new electoral laws the opposition said will bar former presidents from running in forthcoming polls.
