Even though the continent is still to win the golden trophy the dream is to go beyond the quarterfinals stage.
Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia are the African flagbearers in the World Cup competition in Russia. The dream of Africa is to go closer to the finals.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are in an interesting group along with Croatia, Iceland and Argentina. Only Argentina have attended more tournaments than Nigeria yet, the Super Eagles are the least ranked team here. The first game against Croatia would be very crucial and if they can weather the storm, the job will be half done with good motivation for the next two matches. The strength of the Super Eagles is their youthfulness and athleticism which can trouble any team on their good day.
Senegal has the best African team in the competition and will have to face England or Belgium if they make it to the eighth finals. However, it will be a difficult start for the Teranga Lions who have to meet a strong side, Poland in their first game on June 19, 2018. The Teranga Lions have the potentials of going through the group stage and even the knockout stage.
The Moroccans are going back to the World Cup competition after 20 years of absence. It is clear that the team will be out to make up for the years lost. They will have to beat Iran and the two European champions, Spain and Portugal in the group stage. With top players like Medhi Benatia, El Ahmadi and Nabil Dirar, among others, Morocco has strong arguments to face the task ahead and give hope to Africa.
The Pharaohs of Egypt will be taking part in the competition for the first time since they last participated in 1990. Egypt has strong attack machinery capable of facing any challenges.
The team's star is Mohamed Salah (25), who plays for FC Liverpool. If he manages to score goals, the Pharaohs might make it to the second round for the first time ever.
Tunisia will be playing their first World Cup since 2006. Tunisia has never gone beyond the group stage even though they have had five participations. The Carthage Eagles are not expected in the second round of the competition. That alone can be their strength and enable them create a surprise in Russia.
