DRC: Government To Submit Bill On Ex-Presidents

 It offers full protection for former elected Heads of State, their families and assets.

Parliament in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC is expected to be summoned in the coming days for an extraordinary session to discuss a bill on what becomes of former Heads of State, Radio France International, RFI reported on June 17, 2018.

According to government sources, the bill concerns the protection that will be granted ex-leaders, with six months to the next general elections on December 23, 2018 - including the presidential poll.

Way back in 2015, Senator Modeste Mutinga of the G7 political grouping submitted a similar bill to the Senate, but nothing much came out of it. The bill to be submitted by government to parliament is a modification of what Senator Mutinga initiated three years ago.

In September 2017, senators adopted the report of the special committee set up to examine the bill by Senator Modeste Mutinga on offering physical and material protection to former presidents, their families and assets. In addition, all elected former Heads of State will be offered a residential villa, and in case of death, spouses and minor children will continue to receive their allowances.
