Education For All: Schools Galore As Proximity Prioritised

The strategic creation of primary, secondary, and tertiary educational institutions has been a priority for President Paul Biya’s government.

Under President Paul Biya, all 360 subdivisions across the country can boost of at least a secondary school, talk less of primary schools which are spread across villages. The creation, construction of school buildings and staffing happen to be an aspect of the country’s development which President Paul Biya and his government hold in high esteem.

This is evident by the realities on the ground. At the primary level, the government’s resolve has been that each village has a public primary school. And the case has been that most villages nationwide have their Government Primary (or Practicing) School or Government Bilingual Primary School.

In exceptional cases where the pupil population is too small and doesn’t rationally call for the creation of a school, such localities have been served by public schools in nearby villages. President Paul Biya by his action has manifested the wish to have all Cameroonians easily access basic education.

This is guided by the fact that he has prioritized proximity of schools to the learners. In addition, the Head of State abolished the payment of fees in primary schools – granting free education for all kids.

Thanks to this action, Cameroon was able to achieve Millennium Development Goal Number Two – universal primary education for boys and girls. Despite the progress and successes recorded in the primary education milieu, President Biya and his government have not relented their efforts in making things get better.

For the academic year running, some 15,362 teachers have been trained on new curricula in primary and pre-school. Some FCFA 4 billion has also been set aside to be transferred to local councils for the acquisition of minimum packages for governme...
