Dr. Liu Fang, Dermatologist, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital

How do you feel being a medical specialist in China?

I feel proud and respectable to be a medical specialist in China. I have been in the profession for 21 years from the postgraduate training since 1997. Since 2007, I have been a specialist in the field of fungus infectious disease, human papillomavirus?HPV? infectious diseases and pathogenesis of melanoma. Tinea, urticaria?eczema?dermatitis?psoriasis, vitiligo, herpes?drug eruption?erysipelas?bullous pemphigoid?dermal vasculitis?warts, condyloma acuminata?syphilis?gonorrhea?et al are the main problems that patients seek for medications from me. As often my aims are treating them with medicine, sometimes the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and physical treatment including laser and ultraviolet. As for prevention, vaccination is very important for protecting the uninfected persons. I must say that to be a doctor is not easy for the responsibility: night shift and overburdened work. Also, as a female doctor, I must keep balance between work and family life. That needs wisdom and I am lucky that I have got the understanding of all my family members.

As a specialist, what changes would you want to observe in the current healthcare system?

The current healthcare system is efficient and cheap and convenient for most of the patients even the patients don’t have any medical insurance in China. But we also need further improvement.  We need to build many more profound family or community medical care units to provide basic medical care for the local residents all over the country including rural areas. Then, the specialists and professors in teaching hospitals like Beijing Chaoyang Hospital can do more challenging research work to solve more difficult problems. As concerns the Department of Dermatology, there are some innovations in the field of immunological skin diseases?fungus infectious skin diseases and skin surgery.

How efficient is the healthcare system in China?

As I said earlier, in my opinion?the health care system of China is open?cheap?efficient and convenient.
