CAR: UN Gives Security Support Assurance

The UN Under-Secretary-General Jan Eliasson was in Bangui on November 2, 2016.

 

The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Organisation, Jan Eliasson during high level discussions in Bangui on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 assured the people of the Central African Republic of the UN continuous support and the determination to prevent atrocities caused by the upsurge of violence, RFI reported.

After discussions with President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, the UN senior official reportedly said that he came to evaluate the current situation in the country. His visit came two weeks to the conference of donors of the country that will take place in Brussels. Jan Eliasson’s visit also came on the heels of the end of the mandate of French force, Sangaris and increased attacks against UN peacekeepers.

While at the National Assembly he answered the House Speaker Karim Meckassoua’s question on security issues by stating that the UN has learned lessons from the sad events and would do everything possible to prevent the repetition of such atrocities. Members of Parliament such as the opposition leader, Anicet Georges Dologuélé said the UN forces have to be more offensive in the country to curb violence.
