The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoa Obama, November 24 presented the 2019 draft budget of her ministry before the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly. She said the Ministry would continue the implementation of the same programmes as last year, with more resources tilted towards the empowerment and protection of women and children in crisis-hit regions of the North West, South West, East and Far North regions. The three programmes include, Women’s Empowerment and Gender Promotion; Family Development and Protection of Children’s Rights; and Institutional Support and Governance. The proposed budget of the Ministry is six billion four hundred and seventy million (6,470, 000, 000) FCFA. The draft operation budget of the ministry stands at five billion four hundred and seven million (5, 477,000,000) while the tentative Public Investment Budget is nine hundred and ninety-three million (993,000, 000) FCFA. “The worsening situation in the North West and South West is putting many families at risk. Many families have been scattered all over the national territory - if they are not in bushes. So we are going to use the means put at our disposal by government and partners to provide psychosocial counseling to victims of violence in these regions,” Minister Abena Ondoa told reporters. On a general note, she said the ministry would ensure the participation of women in the 2019 municipal and legislation elections and push for their integration in all walks of life.
