Madagascar: Ravalomanana Concedes Defeat

In a strong sign of peace and reconciliation, Marc Ravalomanana, the runner-up in Madagascar’s recent runoff presidential election, which was won by Andry Rajoelina, on January 9, 2019 felicitated him after first rejecting the results.

In a three-minute audio recording, the former president conceded defeat to Rajoelina and appealed for peace and reconciliation, Radio France International, RFI said. In a similar move, senior officials of Ravalomanana’s TIM party also have been congratulating Rajoelina, also a former head of state, on his electoral victory. Meanwhile, the newly elected president is to be sworn in on January 19, 2019.
