The SDO for Bui, Nzeki Theophile, on November 12, 2016, decorated his casket with the Medal of Officer of the Cameroon Order of Valour.
Prof. Bole Butake, who passed away on October 1, 2016, in Yaounde, was buried in his native Nkor village in Noni Sub-division, Bui Division of the North West Region on Saturday, November 12, 2016. The Senior Divisional Officer for Bui, Nzeki Theophile, who represented the Head of State at the event, decorated the fallen literary luminary posthumously with the Medal of Officer of the Cameroon Order of Valour.
At a requiem mass at the Saint Patrick Church, Nkor, which was attended by late Butake’s colleagues, amongst other dignitaries, Rev. Father Sylvester Ngariba in his sermon reminded mourners that death holds the golden key to heaven. He said death marks the beginning of an endless life into eternity. Ngariba noted that though there was sadness because of the loss, mourners ought to be happy because the late professor was undoubtedly with God.
Mayor Wache of Nkor Council, one of late Butake’s contemporaries, described him as a social and professional model. He said Butake had moral and mental independence. Wache intimated that Butake would have preferred to be celebrated instead of being mourned. According to Prof. Alobwede, Butake stood for societal justice. “A very strong No is better than a flimsy Yes,” he said of his fallen friend and colleague. He thanked the State for burying Butake with national honours.
Speaking on behalf of Noni elite, Shey Dr Peter Mabu, Deputy General Manager of SOPECAM, said government honours hard work. He paid tribute to Butake for his enormous efforts in developing his native Nkor. Dr Asheri Kilo, Technical Adviser in the Ministry of Arts and Culture, said Butake will never die as long as theatre lives on. “My father was a simple and unique person,” said Bolang Bukake, daughter of the deceased. As part of the tribute to the fallen playwright and actor, excerpts of one of his plays, “And Palm Wine Will Flow,” were staged in church, to the admiration of mourners.
