Venezuela: Government Foils Opposition-led Putsch

Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro on May 1, 2019 announced that his government had defeated a military coup attempt by the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, reported. Dozens of National Guardsmen sided with the opposition in clashes on April 30, 2019 that injured more than 100 people. In a defiant TV address, Maduro said Guaidó had failed to turn the military against him. Venezuela has been embroiled in months of dispute between President Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó, a former National Assembly Speaker who proclaimed himself president following social discontent over rising cost of living. The crisis has seen supporters of both men often clashing during rival street protests.
