MP says decentralization is best form of Governance

Hon. Joseph Kankeu of the Mifi constituency, says complete decentralization is best form of governance that will enable the population to play more active role in local public affairs. He said decentralization that goes with the transferred of competence and responsibilities to local authorities, is simply to encourage local governance, that will offer opportunities for ordinary people to play more active role in the development process, based on consensus that involves local authorities elected by the populace. Hon. Kankeu, who is on a sensitization campaign tour of the three subdivisions in Mifi division of the West region, was speaking in Bafoussam on 3,May, 2019,while officially launching his sensitization campaign tour to explain the importance of decentralization as best option to achieve development. He said progress towards decentralization was well advanced with the creation of the Ministry of Decentralization and Local development. Hon. Kankeu cited decree N°.2019/0829/PM of 22, February, 2019, setting up the allocation and funds for the effective functioning of the decentralization process which is already enshrined in the state vision development plan, He announced that a number of decrees have been signed by the Head of State to define each authority prerogative. He regretted that in the past sorne Government officials remained reluctant to delegate a share of their responsibilities to local authorities, especially when it means relinquishing their hold on management of resources. He is expected to used the occasion during his tour to the three subdivisions of Bafoussam, 1,11 and 111 to explain other laws voted during the last parliamentary session. For his part, Governor Awa Fonka Augustine, explained that the role of the supervisory authority was still imperative, considering that most local elected authorities lack basic training in setting up and implementing development plans, insisting that corruption and misuse of funds are common. Governor Awa Fonka, not further that administrative authorities most step in to decide on the problems that require urgent attention.
