Economic cooperation is top on the agenda with the announced construction of 5, 300 social lodging in Douala and Yaounde by a British firm.
Cameroon and the United Kingdom are bound by historical links which started during the colonial period. As a former British trusteeship territory, relations between Cameroon and the United Kingdom were established immediately after independence in 1960 at the Ambassadorial level. The cooperation between both countries, has been gaining momentum with economic ties now taking centre-stage.
The audience the Head of State, Paul Biya, granted a delegation of a British firm accompanied to the Unity Palace yesterday November 17, 2016 by the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Brian Olley, attest to the fact that both parties are determined to seeing cooperation heightened with the announcement to construct 5, 300 social housing facility in Douala.
The project “Cameroon Living” according to officials of NMS Infrastructure firm is estimated at 208 million Euros with the intention of giving a pad on the bark of the government in its drive to providing social housing in the country. The project, it should be noted is the spin-off of the Yaounde International Economic Conference that took place in May 2016. Earlier in 2014, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang led a delegation to United Kingdom for a conference on investing in Cameroon, with the aim of attracting British business persons to invest in Cameroon.
Apart from several economic ententes between both countries, there has also been a series of exchange visits in the diplomatic, political, security and economic domains amongst others. After joining the Commonwealth on November 1, 1995, several exchange visits have been carried out at high level with an official visit of the Head of State to the UK in 2004. Statistics from the Ministry of External Relations indicate that about 35, 700 Cameroonians live in the United Kingdom.
