Cameroon’s Cyprian Ashu Besong is the new head coach of South Sudan football team. The former PWD of Bamenda player in the 1984-1985 was appointed by the South Soudan Football Association (SSFA) on July 5, 2019. He replaces caretaker coach Ramzi Sebit. He is now the 14th head coach to handle the team.
The post of head coach had been vacant since September 2018 following the resignation of Algeria’s Ahcene Ait-Abdelmalek just seven months after his appointment. Ashu Besong becomes South Sudan’s fifth foreign coach following the departure of Ait-Abdelmalek, South Korea’s Lee Sung-Jea, Serbian Zoran Dordevic and Uganda’s Leo Adraa. The new head coach has been handed the daunting task of masterminding South Sudan’s first appearance in the finals of a major continental competition since their independence in 2011. The country has only ever taken part in the CECAFA Cup of 2012, and in the 2015 and 2017 Nations Cup qualifications, failing to impress at all attempts.
