Harambee Starlets; A Team To Watch

Despite having embraced soccer many years earlier than other African countries, the Harambee Starlets of Kenya have never been able to create an impact on the continental scene.

The few attempts they made were either marred by poor preparation or internal feuds that led to the federation being suspended by the World Football Governing Body (FIFA). Instead of tearing them apart, the different wrangling have instilled a spirit of unity among the managers who kept their differences aside and find-tuned strategies aimed at boosting the countries soccer. Today, they are reaping the fruits of hard work as they now sail from victory-to-victory with the most prestigious being their qualification for the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON).

To grab their qualification ticket, “The Gallant” (their other nickname), after journeying to the second round without any sweat following the cancellation of the away an return leg encounters against DRC Congo, surprised many bookmakers’,by playing a 2 – 2 draw against the Fennecs.of Algeria at the Stade 5 Juillet 1962 and a one all tie a week after at the MISC Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. Since then, the Harambee Starlets under the auspices of head coach David Ouma has been waxing strong with a series of tournaments and friendly matches. Immediately after their qualification for the final phase of Africa’s most prestigious female soccer event, the Starlets began preparation by participating at the CECAFA Regional Tournament where they lost 1 - 2 to Tanzania at the finals.

Though they also took part in another tournament in Spain during which they put on a very good show, the team has been severely amputated after a sex scandal that led to the axing of some key players by the head coach David Ouma, and the personal withdrawal of Neddy Atieno, who joined the Kenya Defence Forces, Mwanahalima Dogo Adam, who is writing her Kenya Certificate of Secondary School and striker Enez Mango who has left the country after grabbing a job with Google.
