Key actions include accelerating economic growth, organizing the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 and youth empowerment.

Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang on November 22, 2016 at the National Assembly presented government’s economic, financial, social and cultural programme for the financial year 2017.  The programme is expected to be financed by the draft State budget for the 2017 fiscal year contained in the Finance bill 2016 that is balanced in revenue and expenditure at FCFA 4,373.8 billion, against FCFA 4,234.7 billion in 2016, registering an increase of FCFA 139 billion in absolute terms and 3.3 per cent in relative terms.

The presentation of the programme came shortly after the tabling of the Finance bill for 2016 in the House during the ongoing November 2016 ordinary session of Parliament devoted essentially for the examination and adoption of the 2017 State budget.

Preparation for AFCON 2019

One of government’s key priorities in the 2017 financial year is the preparation for Cameroon’s organization of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2019.  As stated by the Prime Minister in his presentation, it requires that “we plan ahead and already start constructing the many infrastructure required to be ready to host this important event.” Another key event in the sports and physical education sector will be the preparation for Cameroon’s participation at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2017 in Gabon.

Economic Growth

Prime Minister Yang said that government plans to closely monitor the implementation of the Three-Year Emergency Plan for Accelerating Economic Growth. In this connection, he said government intends to intensify the transformation of the economy through the implementation of a National Industrialisation Plan.

This will be achieved by promoting sub-sectors that generate growth in order to make the country’s economy more competitive. Focus will also be on road infrastructure with the ambition to asphalt at least 250 kilometres of new roads, 100 kilometres of communal roads with seal coating. Government also plans to asphalt 677 kilometres of roads under the Emergency Plan.
