Bafoussam Landslide Disaster : Nation Mourns 43 Killed

Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute personally represented President Paul Biya in the tribute and funeral ceremony in Bafoussam on November 9, 2019.

The Head of State, President Paul Biya on November 8, 2019 declared the next day,  November 9, 2019 as the National Day of Mourning in memory of the  43 people who lost their lives in the neighbourhood of Gouache 4 Block 6   Bafoussam in the landslide disaster of October 28 night breaking 29, 2019. 
The entire nation showed compassion but the real place of mourning was in Bafoussam where Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute personally represented the Head of State in the tribute and funeral ceremony. The Prime Minister started his condolence visit to Bafoussam with a guided visit to the disaster site where he saw the Military Engineering Corps clearing the area and demolishing houses that were still found there. On the site, he listened to explanations from the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustin on what happened and progress and also from the Director of the Military Engineering Corps, Colonel Jackson Kamgaing on the works.
The veritable place for mourning was the Bafoussam Grandstand where before the arrival of the Prime Minister, the coffins bearing the corpses of the 43 victims were already displayed.  The huge crowd made up of government officials, local administrative, religious and traditional authorities and the population came to pay their last respects to the victim. The Prime Minister paid tribute to the victims, encouraged family members of the victims.  Also joined by all the mourners, while standing up, he witnessed all the corpses being taken away for burial.
One of the major highlights of the sad event was the condolence message of the President of the Republic addressed to the families of the victims. The message addressed on October 29, 2019 in an official telegram was read out by the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustin. President  Paul Biya in the message associated his compassion and that of his Wife Chantal Biya and asked the Governor to transmit wishes of prompt recovery to the injured persons and comfort to the survivors. Conspicuously present in the ceremonial ground was a banner that carried the condolence message of the President of the Republic and his wife and also carried their effigies.  In front of the stand with the banner...
