Coton Sport of Garoua have tightened their grip at the helm of the Elite One championship as the competition nears the end of the first phase. The Garoua boys beat Avion of Nkam 2-1 in a day 15 encounter at the Coton Sport Ngalbidje Stadium in Garoua on Sunday December 22, 2019 to secure the top seat. The competition is getting tougher with each side eying the top seat. A total of nine matches were played with 20 goals scored and four draws recorded. Three of the victories were won at home and one away.
After 15 playing days, Coton Sport is leading the classification table with 31 points. PWD of Bamenda is second with 28 points and TKC is third with 24 points. Even though Coton Sport is on top, they are still threatened by PWD of Bamenda that thrashed APEJES of Mfou 5-1 at the Yong Sports Academy Stadium in Bamenda. Coton Sport will have to fight hard to maintain their leadership position. TKC moved to the third position after they beat Dragon of Yaounde 1-0 in Yaounde.
In the other matches played, bottom-placed AS Fortuna beat Canon Sportif of Yaounde 1-0 at the Ngoa-Ekelle Stadium in Yaounde. That was the third victory for AS Fortuna this season. Despite the defeat AS Fortuna remains last on the classification table. At the CAF Excellence Centre in Mbankomo, Colombe of Dja and Lobo played a 1-1 draw with Union Douala and Yong Sports Academy humbled Eding Sport FC 4-1. In Melong, Stade Renard drew 1-1 with Fovu of Baham at the Melong Municipal Stadium and UMS played a 0-0 tie with Panthere Sportive of Nde at the Loum Municipal Stadium. In Limbe Bamboutos played a virgin tie with Feutcheu FC of Djiko at the Limbe Centenary Stadium.
The teams are on a two-week break and play will resume on January 5, 2019. Four teams are swimming in relegation waters. They are UMS of Loum with 17 points, Canon Sportif of Yaounde 16, Union Douala 16 and AS Fortuna 12 points.
