Coronavirus Pandemic : UNICEF Empowers Douala Red Cross Volunteers

Some 300 volunteers and First Aid workers are deployed in the city’s five subdivisions.

The Cameroon Red Cross Wouri Divisional Branch in Littoral Region on March 27, 2020 deployed 400 volunteers and First Aid workers on the field to sensitise the public on how to protect themselves against the Coronavirus. This was made possible by the financial and material assistance of the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and the technical support of the Littoral Regional Delegation of Public Health.
UNICEF has offered soap, buckets, 40-litre kegs and detergent. Some 300 40-litre kegs have been received and distributed to public institutions in Douala. The Red Cross has also received 70 1,000-litre water tanks, which are yet to be set up in Douala. For now, UNICEF-donated material is in use at 75 hand-washing sites in Douala, managed by Cameroon Red Cross volunteers and First Aid workers. 
The United Nations Children’s Fund also offers a stipend of 50,000 FCFA to each volunteer every two weeks. They serve for two weeks and are replaced by other volunteers.
