As political parties brace up to nominate candidates and traditional rulers on their part prepare to constitute lists in the various constituencies for the December 6, 2020 election of Regional Councillors, they must know qualification criteria and cases of incompatibilities.
On qualification of candidates, Section 175 (1) of the Electoral Code provides that, « Any Cameroonian citizen, of either sex, who enjoys the right to vote, is entered on electoral registers, is aged 23 years at the date of the election, can read and write English or French and shows proof of effective residence of at least six months within the area of the council concerned can be nominated as candidate for elections. » Section 251 (1) for specifies that, « No person may stand for election into a Regional Council unless effectively resident in the region concerned. However, non-residents of a region may stand for election into a Regional Council if they are domiciled within the territory of the region concerned. »
