“Most Recommendations Have Been Or Are In The Process Of Being Implemented”

Paul Tasong, National Coordinator of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions.

What is your appreciation on the implementation of recommendations taken during the major national dialogue?
Let us first of all recall that the Major National Dialogue was convened by the President of the Republic, to examine the ways and means of responding to the deep aspirations of the populations of the North-West and South-West regions, but also of all the other components of our Nation. At the end of this confab of more than 600 participants representing Cameroonians from all walks of life, chaired by Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, Prime Minister, Head of Government, the Head of State H.E Paul Biya promised to carry out a careful and diligent examination of the recommendations made in order to put them into effect, according to the capacities of our country.
A year after the Major National Dialogue, most of the recommendations have been or are in the process of being implemented. For example, we have:
-The promulgation of the law to promote official languages which seeks to ensure the equal use of English and French in the administrations and public bodies, and to encourage Cameroonian citizens to express themselves in these two languages;
-The adoption of the general code of regional and local authorities taking into account the proposals of the MND, in particular: (i) granting a special status to the North-West and South-West Regions; (ii) the obliteration of legal provisions relating to the appointment of government delegates; (iii) the substantial reduction in state supervision over regional and local authorities; (iv) the principle of transferring 15% of the state budget to regional and local authorities and (v) the imminent establishment of the regions following the elections scheduled for the 6 December 2020;
-The establishment of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North-West and South-West Regions, the primary objective of which is to allow the affected populations to regain a minimum of dignity and autonomy in view of the return of the peace.
So, as you can see, the results are positive. However, the Government remains committed, under the leadership of the Prime Minister and with the support of our national and international partners, to pursue the implementation of the remaining recommendations within the framework set by the President of the Republic, H. E. Paul Biya.
In your opinion, how is the population of the North-West and South-West regions receiving the implementation of these recommendations?
It’s clear that the vast, moderate majority of the population welcomes the implementation of the recommendations of the Major National Dialogue.
With regard to the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions specifically, the awareness tour that we carried out in the two regions gave us the opportunity to meet with the resilient and enthusiastic populations. Despite the deep distress they have gone through in the past four years of sufferings and hardship imposed on them by belligerent groups, they are hopeful and determined not to make suffer...
