Douala is more than 90 per cent ready to host the 2021 edition of the African Nations Championship and what is remaining are just some minute finishing touches that cannot have a negative impact on the organisation of the tournament. This was the major outcome of the 6th ordinary session of the local organising committee or ‘committee of sites’, which took place last week at the conference hall of the Governor’s office. The various matches which took place at the Bepanda and Japoma stadiums served as test of the infrastructure and organisational capacity of the committee.
According to the report of the site coordinators, some 950 volunteers have been mobilised for the event, 600 for the Japoma stadium and 350 for the Reunification stadium in Bepanda. The various pitches are ready as well as the video assistance referee, VAR. Wi-Fi connections in the stadiums have been installed and tested and the accreditation centre is ready. As concerns transportation, vehicles and drivers have been mobilised towards the event including some 200 bike riders, 59 taxis, two MA60 planes, two coaster buses and 25 buses and a towing vehicle.
