U-20 Africa Cup of Nations : Competition Kicks Off On Sunday

The U-20 Lions will play the opening game against Mauritania on February 14, 2020 after ending a two-week training session in Morocco.

xThe 16th edition of the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will kick off in Mauritania on Sunday, February 14, 2021. The biennial international youth football tournament is organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for players aged 20 and below. Mali are the defending champions. A total of 12 teams from the six CAF zones will take part in the competition. The national U-20 Lions of the Cameroon are already in Mauritania where they will take part in the competition. 
Prior to their departure, the team trained at the CAF Excellence Centre in Mbankomo under the supervision of the head coach, Ousmanou Christophe. The U-20 Lions later moved to Morocco to fine-tune their skills at the Technical Centre of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. At the CAF Excellence Centre in Mbankomo the U-20 Lions played several friendly matches with some clubs in the country. During their stay in Morocco the U-20 Lions played three friendly games winning two and losing one. They defeated Burkina Faso 1-0, but suffered a two nil defeat to Gambia and beat the Central African Republic 3-0 in their last game. All three opponents, Burkina Faso, Gambia and Central African Republic have also qualified for the U-20 AFCON. Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic are drawn in group B alongside Namibia and Tunisia while Gambia is in group C alongside Morocco, Tanzania and Ghana. The U-20 Lions are in group A and will play the opening game against host, Mauritania, before facing Uganda and Mozambique.
