Overwhelming US Domination At Rio

They keep on widening the leadership gap dispelling suspense as to who will be the eventual overall winner of the games.

As the saying goes, many are called but few are chosen. Of the 206 nations taking part in the Rio Olympics, only 72 have so far won medals with the United States of America reigning supreme with a total of 75 medals won so far; 26 gold, 23 silver and 26 bronze. The surprise guest at the top of the medal count is Great Britain who have overtaken China and are now distant second with 41 medals won, 16 in gold, 17 silver and eight bronze. China comes third with more medals than Britain (46) but with Britain having an edge having won one more gold medal than China. Despite all the woes before the competition owing to the doping scandal that depleted their squad for the competition, Russia occupies an enviable 4th position on the medal tally sheet.

While Europe and America continue to dominate the competition, it has been a dismal performance from African countries with only four African countries appearing on the medal count table. The first African country is Kenya and appears on the 18th position on the general classification table with a total of 5 medals, two gold and three silver. In the process, Kenyan born David Rudisha made Africa proud by conserving the gold medals he won in London 2012 in Rio when he again won gold in the 800m race. The second African country of the medal chart is South Africa and appears at the 31st position on the general classification table after having won a total of seven medals; one gold, five silver and one bronze. Ethiopia is the third African country on the medal ranking appearing in the 42nd position. The other African medallists are Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia in order of merit with at least a medal to their credit. The host country Brail appears on the 16th position with nine medals; two gold, three silver and four bronze.

Meanwhile Cameroon broke tradition this year as they are likely to leave the competition for the first time in history without winning at least a medal. The last hopes of winning a medal now lie on the wrestlers, Ali Anabel Laure and Essombe Tiako who join the fray today.
