Senate: Calls For Unity To Better Handle Challenges

Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji made the appeal on November 11, 2021 as he presided at the opening plenary sitting of the House for the November ordinary session.

The President of the Senate, Marcel Niat Njifenji has called on the government to seek solutions to enable Cameroonians adopt, during their online activities, a responsible and civicminded attitude, compatible and ensuring freedom of expression, respect for privacy and the protection of living together.

In his opening speech at the Senate, he also called on Cameroonians to remain united and to stand behind President Paul Biya because, “Together, we must overcome our divisions and strengthen national cohesion in order to better handle our challenges and peacefully continue our march toward emergence.” President Niat Njifenji spoke in the presence of Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute who led cabinet ministers to the opening plenary sitting of the November ordinary session of the Upper House of Parliament and other dignitaries. His appeal was based on the growing social ills in society mostly propagated through the social media networks. The abusive use of the new communication tools, he said, results in many challenges related to the respect of public and individual liberties, stability of democracy and maintenance of social peace. There is therefore an upsurge of condemnable vices such as disinformation, hate speech, threats to privacy and dignity.

Concerning Cameroonians living in the Diaspora, the Senate President said the country needs them for development challenges and living in peace. He therefore appealed to them, “Following the Head of State, H.E. Paul Biya, I call on our fellow citizens, living abroad, to get more involved in the local development projects in their Regions, towns and villages of origin, and also to show interest in other sectors of the national economy.” He equally called on them “to reserve an important place for peace building and peace keeping without which ...
