Scientific Research: Contributions Of Dr Nounamo Laurent Acknowledged

Colleagues on January 12, 2017 in Yaounde paid last respects to the beans specialist.

 

Many Cameroonian and African households today enjoy eating different improved varieties of beans without knowing who was behind such improvements in nutritional value. Cameroonian-born Dr Nounamo Laurent, who passed away in the United States of America on October 16, 2016, was the key figure behind beans research in Cameroon for years. He will be buried in Bayangam on Saturday, January 14, 2017.

The retired Senior Research Officer, coordinated research on at least 12 beans varieties today enjoyed in Cameroon and some African countries. In acknowledgment of his role in scientific research, former colleagues of the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development, IRAD, Nkolbisson, Yaounde, on January 12, 2017, paid last respects to Dr Nounamo at the institute’s campus. The event was also attended by the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, Dr Madeleine Tchuinte. Different speakers lauded the research and management qualities of Dr Nounamo, revisiting his key role in crop research spanning 39 years.

Apart from beans research, he also contributed significantly to the production of the Cameroon Beans Atlas, as well as taking part in efforts to improve cucumber production.
