Liv’s Nigh-Club Tragedy: Head of State Instructs Investigation

Below is a communique from the Minister of Communication, Government Spokesperson.

This Sunday, 23 January 2022, around 2:30 am, an accidental fire broke out in the Liv’s Night-Club Yaouba cultural complex, located at the Bastos neighbourhood in Yaounde.
The tragedy, which was caused by explosions from the fireworks usually used in this place, first let to the burning of the ceiling of the building, resulting in two high-amplitude blasts, causing panic and jostling among the people inside the nightclub.
The initial toll of this fire indicates 16 people dead, all of whom were taken to the mortuary of the Ekounou Military Hospital; and 8 people seriously injured, who were taken to the Yaounde Central Hospital, and are currently under intensive care.
When informed of the situation, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, immediately ordered that all the injured be fully taken care of. He has also instructed the opening of a thorough investigation to shed light on this tragedy which has plunged several families into mourning among our populations.
Moreover, all measures are being taken to identify the corpses and ensure their burial in accordance with usual practice.
