Yaounde Celebrates Lions’ Qualification

Fans in drinking spots, fan zones and households in the nation’s political capital could not contain their joy when Cameroon scored twice against Gambia at the Japoma stadium.

About one hour to the kick-off of the Cameroon-Gambia game at 5 p.m. at the Japoma stadium in Douala, some Yaounde city dwellers were already seen hurrying home not to miss any moment of the encounter. Some drinking spots were highly animated even before the encounter. Customers trooped in their numbers to watch the quarterfinals game over the weekend in all conviviality. In fan zones, many were scrambling to have a comfortable seat. In some households, football lovers were struggling to round off their home activities to tune in to the match. This is the case of a household at the Ete-tak neighbourhood in Yaounde. But even before kick-off, the sound of vuvuzela animated the whole neighbourhood.
When the game finally began, the Ete-tak family was scorched to their screen. “Cameroon must win this match”, the third child of the family shouted. “Who is Gambia. In our days when we used to talk of football nations, Gambia was not even cited as one,” the mother of the home said. The first half ended with no goal, the whole neighbourhood was quiet, eagerly waiting for the second half to begin. “The boys are doing well, I am sure the second half will be better,” another child of the family said.
